What we have been learning………

EYFS

This week in EYFS we have been reading the story Super Duck. In the story Super Duck made his own kite and with his friends went outside to fly it. We discovered that not all the children had experienced kite flying so decided to try this out for ourselves thankfully on a relatively windy day! We were so inspired that we created our own kites. We had to work out the most appropriate materials to use and what shape our kite needed to be. After lots of planning and creating we took our own kites outside to see how successful they were at flying! Once back inside we talked about our successes and what we would do next time to make our kite even more successful. In Maths we have been exploring the vocabulary associated with weight i.e. heavy, light, heavier, lighter, heaviest, lightest. We learnt how to use a pair of balancing scales to see if the predictions we had about different objects were correct. We then used our evaluations to order objects from heaviest to lightest. We have also been learning about keeping fit and healthy and challenged the children to create obstacle courses in the outdoor area. These were amazing and incorporated a variety of skills including balancing and travelling high and low.

Year 1

This week in Year 1 we have had great fun exploring the characters of Toy Story. We were really excited when Woody and Buzz joined the classrooms and have enjoyed creating riddles to describe them as well as the other characters from the story. In Science this week we discovered that Woody needed a new coat! We tested materials to see which would be best for the job. We learnt that it had to be waterproof, durable, flexible and opaque. Some of us then had fun making them during ID. In Maths we have been focusing on addition. We have used tens frames to add 2 amounts together using our knowledge of number bonds to 10 to complete the calculations. We had great fun practising our throwing and catching skills in PE this week. We practised with lots of different things. We found the balloons the easiest as they are so light that we got longer to try and catch them.

Year 2

In Year 2 we have written our own Lion non-fiction books using the facts we found last week. For your home learning can you write a blurb for your favourite book either a fiction or non-fiction book? In Maths we have started to learn about 2D shapes, describing their properties using the language of sides and vertices. On our ‘Let’s Explore’ day we discussed what a holy book is and made our own class book of special stories that the children like. We are starting to create a piece of art work inspired by sunsets and sunrises in the African Savannah.

Year 2 had the added opportunity this week to visit Kennington WI to watch their annual pantomime. The children were very well behaved and enjoyed the experience.

Safer Internet – Parent Workshop

We will be holding an e-safety information sessions on Monday 4thFebruary at 2.15pm. This will give you an opportunity to hear how we teach your child to keep safe on the internet and will give you useful information about how you can do this at home.  A parent mail has been sent out; please respond to this to book your space or ask your child’s class teacher for a paper copy of the information if you are unable to access parent mail.

Request for help

Year 2 require some resources to enhance their outdoor area, if you have any of the following items, your donations would be greatly appreciated. Old pots, pans, utensils, Lego, garden tools, musical instruments, children’s comics and magazines, cushions, blankets, baskets and art and crafts resources.

Adverse weather arrangements

We will continue to do everything we can to keep the school open. In the event of snow, we will make a decision whether to close the school. We have not closed for a number of years but it does depend on whether enough staff are able to come in. Please presume we are open.

If we are going to close we will let you know by:

The Kent County Council website:https://kentclosures.co.uk.There are two Downs View schools in Kent, so please make sure you search Downs View Infant School.

Our school website will be updated, Parent mail message and we will post on Facebook.A decision will be made as early as possible.  This will inform you of the arrangements for that day. Please avoid calling the school, to keep lines free for important calls.  Please ensure you send your child in in warm clothes and you supply spare clothes in case the children go out and play.  Breakfast club may open late at 8.15am to allow for staff to come in safely. Please check this in the morning.
