Sports Picnic
On Friday August 10th from 11:00 – 13:00 we will be holding a joint sports picnic, with Kennington Academy, in the EYFS area of Downs View school. The Children’s Centre will be joining us for parachute games and other fun activities, and will be able to talk to parents and carers about other holiday events. Please bring a picnic, and something to sit on. Please note, in the event of bad weather, this event will be cancelled, and a message will go out on Facebook. We look forward to seeing you, Claire and Sam (Family Liaison Officers).
What we’ve been up to……
This week in EYFS we have been exploring the story ‘The Mixed Up Chameleon’. In the story the chameleon camouflages himself in a variety of environments. In Literacy we wrote sentences to describe where we would camouflage ourselves depending on which animal we chose. i.e. if I were an owl I would hide in the grey rocks. In Maths we have been creating our own subtraction number stories and recording these in a variety of ways. We have also been enjoying getting to know our Year 1 teaching team, through stories and games on the field with them.
Year 1 have been on a journey around the school and mapped out the journey thinking about the story of “Journey home from Grandpa.’
In Science we have been learning about trees and what they look like in each season, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. During our Maths we have been learning about Time- focusing on O-clock and half past. We have even had a go at creating our own clocks during child initiated time.
In RE we had a lot of fun learning about how babies are welcomed into Christianity. We learnt all about baptism and even had a go at baptising babies ourselves!
We all really enjoyed spending a morning in our new class, getting to know our teachers more and completing exciting challenges.
This week in Year 2 we have explored the text George’s Marvellous Medicine. We have planned our own Marvellous Medicine thinking carefully about what effect each ingredient will have on mean old Granny. In Maths we have continued to explore statistics and have collected and represented our own data in our own choice of pictogram or bar chart. We then wrote questions on our data to find out which were the most and least popular. In History we have consolidated our learning about toys from the past and have played a board game answering questions about how they have changed discussing attitudes, safety, materials and technology. Within Computing we have started to learn about Excel and how to input data and create bar charts. We then changed the names of the axis and changed the colour of the bars. We are really excited to see you Monday evening at Kennington Junior School ready for our transition show at 6pm.
Preparing your child for transition/moving on…
Thank you to all parent/carers who came to our transition meetings for current year R and year 1 parents last night. We hope we have supported you in understanding the exciting similarities and difference of their new year group they are moving on to and addressed any worries you may have had. A copy of the presentations will be uploaded onto the website soon under the teaching and learning tab and transition presentations. Your child has been involved in a range of transition activities to prepare them for these next steps and will come home with a booklet next week which you can read with your child to continue to prepare them during the summer holidays.
Cycle Workshops
Reception and Year 1 have been working with the Cycle Circle team learning to ride a bike. They learnt how to balance and pedal safely avoiding different obstacles on the playground. Thank you to the parents who got involved too at the end of the day and joined in to see the progress their child had made and gain useful tips for how to help them at home. Photographs of the children having fun can be found on our website: http://www.downs-view.kent.sch.uk/pe-and-sports-2017-2018/
