What we have been learning………

This week in EYFS we have been using our reading skills to follow a set of instructions. The instructions we had were in the form of a recipe to bake biscuits which we understand are a firm favourite with all superheroes! We learnt that if we did not follow the instructions carefully that our baking would be inedible! I think we were successful readers, instruction followers and bakers though as we all saw lots of your little superheroes tucking straight in the minute they got to you at home time! In Maths we have been learning to estimate. We estimated how many superheroes were involved in a top secret meeting within a skyscraper. We recorded our predictions through representation and the writing of the numeral before counting the superheroes carefully to see how accurate our estimations had been. We have also been exploring some real superheroes within our community and have discussed the roles that they have and why they are so important.

We have had a really great term and are looking forward to learning more in Term 4!

A little plea…

If you have any boys school trousers that your children have grown out of that we can use for spares. Also our topic next term is bugs. If you have any books about bugs, plastic bugs that you are clearing out please bring them to Mrs Smith. We would be very grateful.

Thank You

Year 1

We have enjoyed the last week of our “Toy Story” topic this term. It has been fun creating our own version of the story “Where’s my Teddy?” The children came up with some super ideas and worked hard to describe their new toy using adventurous adjectives. During Maths this week we have enjoyed learning 2D and 3D shapes, we are trying hard to remember their names as well as how to sort them into groups either by colour or shape. We then looked at making patterns which has been a fun way to finish the week. We have been practising our reading skills in groups again this week, we have been very impressed by the children’s progress and are now challenging the children to retell their books where possible as well as answer questions about them. During ID this week the children have been helping to create art work and resources for the role play areas in our classrooms, we can’t wait to change them ready for our new topic “The Circle of Life” next term. We wish all our Year 1 parents and children a lovely half term break and look forward to seeing you all back and refreshed after a week’s rest.

Year 2

This week in Year 2 we have written newspaper reports to explain the news of Zeraffa Giraffa, to show how astonished the people of Paris were to see a Giraffe that had come all the way from Africa. In Maths we have started to learn about fractions and have explored half of shape and quantities. During Computing we have been photographers! We learnt what makes a good photo and then took our own. We used editing software to edit them to make them even better. We hope everyone has a good half term, ready and refreshed for term 4!

Farewell and Good Luck Mrs Norman

It is Mrs Norman’s last day today; she is leaving to have her second baby. We are sure you will join us to say goodbye and good luck to her and her family. We would like to thank her for the support and care which she provided for Starfish class and  many children across the school. Mrs Claudine Masson will be covering the class in her absence on Thursday and Friday as a job share with Mrs Hunt.

Change to Kennington Academy’s Term Dates

A separate parent mail has been sent with the following information earlier today:

I have been informed that Kennington Academy will be changing their term dates for 2019-2020.  The main changes will affect October half term and a slight change to terms 4 and 5.

Kennington Academy is governed by the Aquilla Trust.  Downs View Infant School is a Kent County Council school and our term dates are set by them. I have discussed this with David Adams, the Kent Area Education Officer and he has confirmed we are unable to change our term dates to match Kennington’s new ones.

I know that this may prove difficult for some parents, especially those planning their personal working arrangements where they have a child here at Downs View and another at Kennington Academy.  The two schools have always worked closely, particularly with matters such as term dates.  It is unfortunate that Aquilla have decided to make such a change in dates and not remain consistent with ours. I have listed the term dates for both schools below.

I will be unable to approve any absence requests for children due to the change in Kennington’s term dates.  This is in accordance with the School’s and Kent County Council’s Absence policy that can be found on the website.

I apologise for the inconvenience this may cause you.  Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or queries.

School Class Photographs

Proofs of your child’s class group photograph were sent home this week. If you would like to place an order these need to be returned to school by Tuesday 25 February 2019.

In line with our policy on taking photographs and filming, we would like to remind you that parents are not permitted to take or use photographs or make a video recording for anything other than their own personal use and would therefore request that these class photographs are not posted on-line for any reason.

Adverse weather arrangements

We will continue to do everything we can to keep the school open. In the event of snow, we will make a decision whether to close the school. We have not closed for a number of years but it does depend on whether enough staff are able to come in. Please presume we are open.

If we are going to close we will let you know by:

The Kent County Council website:https://kentclosures.co.uk.There are two Downs View schools in Kent, so please make sure you search Downs View Infant School.

Our school websitewill be updated, Parent mailmessage and we will post on Facebook.A decision will be made as early as possible.  This will inform you of the arrangements for that day. Please avoid calling the school, to keep lines free for important calls.  Please ensure you send your child in in warm clothes and you supply spare clothes in case the children go out and play.  Breakfast club may open late at 8.15am to allow for staff to come in safely. Please check this in the morning.
