What we’ve been up to………

In EYFS we have continued our topic of water by taking a trip on the rough seas with a motley crew of pirates! We ended up stranded on a desert island. It was better than the pirate ship so we decided to make this our home. So that our families were not worried we sent you all a message in a bottle to tell you what we could see, hear and smell whilst on the island. We made sure when we were writing that we wrote down all of the sounds that we could hear for the words needed in the right order.  We even tried to add adjectives (describing words) to our writing to make our sentences more exciting. In Maths we used our pirate ship flags to help us double numbers by making sure that each side of the ships flag had the same amount of pirate spots! We have also been very creative and have made crocodiles from junk boxes and egg boxes, our own pirate hats and telescopes.

Please remember:

1)To return by the end of next week any homework for this term so that we can share it with the rest of the class.

2)When writing with your children at home avoid giving them the spellings for the words they need. Let them sound out and write the sounds that they can hear as otherwise when writing in school they develop an ‘I can’t’ rather than ‘I can’. Remember by doing this all you are teaching them is that you can do it!

Year 1 have been creating persuasive posters to encourage people to visit Dover Castle in English; we used captions and phrases to entice the public to visit! We have enjoyed reading ‘George and the Dragon’ and adapted the story to relate our own version with different characters.

In Maths we have been learning how to half shapes and numbers. We have been using counters to help us split the number and then represent this using the part part whole model.

In ICT we have continued to draw fairy tale characters using the Paint program on the computer. We’ve all enjoyed practising or tennis skills by using racquets to serve and receive the ball by attempting a mini game with our partner.

We were able to evaluate what went well for our drawbridges in design and Technology and discuss how they could be adapted or made better.

This week in Year 2 has been fun and challenging! We’ve tried hard at our challenges and are really proud at what we have learnt this year. In Maths we have recapped arrays, thinking of the equations they represent such as multiplication, division and retreated addition. In English we have read the story “Afternoon on the amazon”, this inspired us to plan our own story changing the setting using our knowledge of habitats from science. We then created this setting creatively for some filming and writing next week! In PE we have reinforced our tennis skills learnt this term, whilst being active we have practised our catching, balancing and striking of the ball.

Reviews of our school

We have had two visits during the last week; one from two other Headteachers and one by our Improvement Advisor.  Both reviews were very thorough with very positive outcomes. Our key strengths were the high levels of engagement of all children in learning, appropriate challenge for all children within their learning and the children’s ability to demonstrate knowledge and understanding with high levels of independence.  This was a credit to all staff whose hard work and dedication enable your children to learn in such a positive and stimulating environment.

Royal Wedding fundraiser

Thank you to all parents who supported us with our Royal Wedding fundraiser today.  Each year group will be using the money for specific year group resources which we will show you once purchased.  Coin donations are making such a difference to the extra resources that our budgets just cannot stretch to any more.  If you bought raffle tickets for the cakes, these will be picked out at after the picnic for the lucky winners to share over the weekend whilst watching the wedding.
