What we have been learning………
This week in EYFS we have been thinking about our highlights and favourite memories from this year. We discussed them before using our amazing pre-cursive handwriting to write these thoughts down on a mind map. As you can imagine the thoughts were all very varied from going on our school trip to learning to read and write! In Maths we have been exploring money. We looked at the values of different coins and then used these coins to pay for goods in our class shops. It is amazing how expensive the children wanted the goods to be! We also continued to be very active by completing a circuit which used all the different skills that we have learnt this year from balancing to throwing and catching. Finally we have enjoyed used our imaginations and creative skills to create a variety of space vehicles made from both junk and construction materials following on from various space themed stories which have been helping us to continue to take flight into year 1!
What a busy last full week we have had in Year 1! We have enjoyed designing and labelling our own dream location. The children created amazing funfairs, water parks and even tropical beaches. In Art we have finished our Banksy paintings, even though creating a stencil proved quite tricky the children tried very hard and produced a super end result. In Maths we have been consolidating our learning over the year in a range of fun activities. We also learnt all about recycling, reducing and reusing in PSHE this week so expect to be told off if you are not already doing this at home! We are really looking forward finishing our year with some fun activities next week and wish you all a super sunny and restful summer holidays!
What a fun week we have had in year 2! In English we have planned our own story thinking about the setting and the habitats we have learnt about this year. We then made our own boxes to look like the setting, including our chosen characters. Then we used the Lego Movie Maker app to film our own stop motion film. We used the different effects and texts carefully to wow everyone! Within Maths we have designed, created and played our own board games together. We thought carefully about the rules and how to win the game. On our Let’s Explore day we explored different materials and their uses. We categorised materials into their type then tested some materials to identify whether they are strong or waterproof. Thank you to everyone who came on Monday to our end of year show! The children really shone and showed how far they have come whilst at Downs View!
Absence – reminder
If your child is poorly and unable to come to school, please ensure that you inform the office via telephone on our attendance line or via Parentmail. This should be done before school on the first day of absence. Please be aware that we will call you if we haven’t heard from you or may even come to your home as we have a duty of care to ensure that all children who are absent from school are safe and accounted for. If you have taken your child to the doctors it is useful to get an appointment card as proof of this. Remember we can administer prescribed medication so if your child is feeling better but needs medicine, this can be brought to the office and administered as necessary. Attendance is very important to ensure that your child does not miss out on valuable learning time – every minute counts! If you are unsure whether your child can come to school, please call the office and somebody will be able to advise you. We are looking forward to welcoming your child back in year 1 and 2 on Wednesday 4thSeptember, hoping that they will have a healthy year ahead! Thank you for your support.
Over the summer break Miss Marsh will be getting married, we wish her all the best for her special day. She will return after the summer holidays as Mrs Garton.
As we come to the end of the year may I take this opportunity to say goodbye and good luck to year 2 who will be embarking on a new exciting journey as they move on to year 3. They have left a mark at Downs View which will stay with us forever. A fond farewell to families who are leaving us with their last sibling in year 2, with many who have been with us for many years. Please keep in touch – you will be greatly missed. Enjoy the summer break and for those families remaining with us, we look forward to seeing you in September.
Have a happy and safe summer holiday – keep that learning up at home and enjoy some precious family time! Mrs Kent
We said a sad farewell to Mrs Kennedy, our cover teacher. She has been with us for many years and has shown dedication and commitment to Downs View and we wish her every success for the future.

Summer holiday maintenance/works
Over the summer holiday we will be having some essential maintenance which is being funded by K.C.C. This involves replacing hot and cold water pipework across the school and the final phase of our perimeter fencing, including replacement gates.
We will also be having a new server fitted which will enhance the use of IT across the school.
This will cause some disruption but we have been assured that all works will be finished by the time children return in September.
Just a reminder that we have a review of interventions and additional support survey that we would like parents to complete that can be accessed via the following link. We would very much appreciate if you are able to take the time to complete this and help us to review our provision for next year; this expires on Tuesday 23 July.
Summer Active Event
On Friday August 9th from 11 am – 1 pm we will be holding a summer active event in the school grounds. There will be art and craft activities, parachute games, an exercise trail and a variety of sports activities. Please bring a picnic, and something to sit on. Please note, in the event of bad weather, this event will be cancelled. Please check our Facebook page for updated information on the day.
Local Community Group
One of our parents is part of a local community group raising funds to help renovate the park at Rylands Road. They have two fund raising events coming up. Battlefield Laser Tag are donating 50% of their profits on Monday 19thAugust and the group are also holding a Teddy Bears picnic in August (poster below). If you can support either of these events that would be appreciated.
WE WISH YOU ALL A VERY HAPPY SUMMER BREAK
