Bonus Coin Winner of the Week – Polar Bears Punctuality Pup – Starfish

What we have been learning …..

EYFS

This week in EYFS we have been focusing on the book The Gruffalo. We have been describing the characters within the book and talking about the different combinations of food that the animals were going to be turned into! We decided that we would not like to eat Gruffalo crumble so followed some instructions to make apple crumble after deciding that the Gruffalo would probably find plenty of apples within the woods! In Maths we have been exploring number and looking at different quantities. We have been working out which would be the odd number of objects out within a set. We have also been exploring printing within art and used some left over fruits and vegetables from our teachers’fridges!

Year 1

What a great start to our “Wish upon a star” topic we have had this week. Wehave learnt all about Walt Disney, what he was famous for and have recorded events on a timeline. We then went on to exploring Disney characters and describing their appearance and personality. We have had a great Circle of Life dance lesson where we explored how to move like different animals to the music, before finishing with a group circle dance. In Maths this week we have been learning how to add two numbers together to make a total. We have explored the different ways we can record and show this. Next week we are looking forward to exploring poetry, using our senses to describe what we see, hear, taste, smell and feel.

Year 2

What a fascinating start to the week it has been in year 2! We launched our ‘Out of this World’ topic by exploring various media to create space themed art work.We used watercolours onto a golden star background, oil pastels onto a white splatter background and scratch art using acrylic paint and oil pastels. We then evaluated our art work discussing our preferred technique. In English we have gathered space facts and have used our knowledge to write a non-chronological

report about some of the planets in our solar system. In Maths we have started learning about money; we have begun to count coins and notes in pence and pounds. In Music we have started to explore pitch and have played a game with our friends to understand high and low sounds. Many of us had great fun at the Halloween party-the pumpkins were amazing!

Year 2 parents

As we are an Infant School, once your child finishes in year 2 they will move on to Kennington Academy or another school. There is an admission process which parents need to go through to secure a place for year 3 which involves completing an application form online and submitting it. You can apply from 5th November until 15th January 2019. We are holding joint prospective parent school tours. Please see below for the dates of these. Please book in with the hosting school to make an appointment. You are welcome to take your child with you if you would like to.

Farewell

We are saying goodbye to Ginny Davis this week. Ginny has been a midday supervisor and relief cleaner for many years and leaves us on Friday. We wish her well in her new position.

Thank you

Over the October half term Seb Corrall and a number of volunteers from Kent Wildlife Trust repaired our fences on the boundary of the Reception area and the school field. It looks amazing and has increased security within this area. We would like to say a huge thank you to them all.

Halloween parties

Thank you to the Friends for organising great parties for the children this week. They had great fun and were very well behaved. The money raised will go towards reading books for each class. Thank you to everybody who took part in the pumpkin competition too. A little prize was given to every child who took part with three overall winners: Maddie in Reception, Charlie G in Year 1 and Amber in Year 2 who won a Halloween craft pack.

Cleaner Required

We are currently looking for a relief cleaner for the school. This will be to cover sickness, therefore we cannot guarantee any specific hours. The hours, when needed, are between 3pm and 5.30pm. If you would be interested in joining our team please contact Claire Pitts in the office.

Nut Allergies

We have a number of children in school with severe nut allergies so we kindly request that nuts are not included in any child’s lunch box. This includes peanut butter spread and Nutella. Thank you for respecting this request.

Parking

Parking in and around our school is always a concern. We have a parking working party meet regularly to discuss and address the issues around parking and driving, trying to find ways to improve congestion and promote safe driving. They met yesterday and some key issues raised were:

  • If you are dropping off children at our school and Kennington CE Academy, we would like to let you know that Kennington CE Academy open their playground at 8.35am, and children can be dropped off from this time as staff are on duty to keep your children safe.
  • If you are arriving at school early in the afternoon to find a parking space to become a volunteer and support with jobs in school. We would be very grateful of any extra help
  • Please can we ask that when you are parking around the school site that you are aware of the restricted parking areas and ensure that these and pavements/crossing points are not blocked. The children’s banners are there to remind you about parking considerately and toput children’s safety first.

Our next meeting is on Thursday 24th January at 9.15am, if you would like to be part of this working party or know of someone in the community that would like to attend, please contact the office.

If you would like further information regarding parking rules, regulation and the pending new nuisance parking legislation, please access the following link:
