What we have been learning………

EYFS

This week in EYFS we have been taking a magic train ride to a variety of imaginative settings. In our Literacy work we thought about where we would ask the train to stop if we were aboard. We then described the setting that the train stopped at. We also thought about what we might hear and smell i.e. in fairground land we saw tall helper smelters, smelt sweet candy floss and hear children laughing. In our music lesson we used the percussion instruments to replicate the sounds that we would hear. In Maths this week we have been creating repeating patterns using two and three objects. We were also able to spot mistakes in the pre made patterns. We also really enjoyed sports day and the EYFS team are super proud of all our little athletes!

Year 1

We have had a lovely week in Year One enjoying and exploring the story of Peace at Last. We have learnt to recite the story with actions, act it out and retell it using story mountains. We then linked music and ICT to the story by adding our own sound effects which we are going to learn how to add to a PowerPoint. In Maths we have been continuing to explore numbers to 100. We are getting very confident at partitioning these bigger numbers into tens and ones. We have now also learnt to compare them by suggesting which is more and which is less. We loved sharing sports day with many of you on Tuesday and we’re so proud of the children’s team spirit and effort in all the activities. In RE this week we have enjoyed acting out the Christian story of the Good Samaritan. We then thought about how we show acts of kindness in our lives.

Year 2

Year 2 have had two visits to Kennington Academy and have had so much fun! We visited their library and playground to find out more about the school. In English we have continued to write postcards as if we had been on a beach holiday, we discussed the weather and how this would impact on the activities we would do. Within Maths we have continued to develop our addition and subtraction knowledge whilst solving equations where numbers bridge the 10s boundaries. This was tricky but we never gave up trying! Within RE we have explored how others care for people in their communities and around the world. We then discussed the Christian beliefs of caring for others.

Eco-Club

During Eco Club this week we went on a electricity hunt around each of the classrooms. We gave every class a point who had turned off their interactive whiteboard, laptop and lights. Squirrel class and Dolphin class scored the most- well done! We also raised £18 at our uniform sale last Friday, thank you for everyone who donated. We still have lots more jumpers and cardigans left so we will be holding another uniform sale soon. Don’t forget to turn off your electrical items!

Friends of Downs View Infant School

The AGM was held this week which outlined the amazing fundraising which has taken place this year, raising a total of £2,172.43. Please see the breakdown below.  A huge thank you for the hard work of all committee members.  Shelley the Chair, Kirsty Secretary and Ritchie Treasurer who have given up endless amount of time to organise key events to raise money for the good of your children.  Other parents who attended the meeting who have also supported at many events across the year are Kirsty D, Michelle and Lianne who deserve a special mention. They are always looking for help for events or in the background so if you can spare a little time please do get in touch with the office.  The friends would like to express a huge thank you to all parents who have supported the Friends, giving kind donations and raising this amazing amount.

The monies raised have been used for the following:

Christmas and Easter gifts, home reading books, Science equipment for experiments in ID time, a new whiteboard for every child, a theatre production for year 1 and 2 (in July), outdoor learning equipment and toys, water colour paints for every class, teddy bears for new Reception children, and medals for year 2.

Wow! What lucky children!

Sports Day 2019

We had so much fun at sports day taking part in a variety of team races such as space hoppers, javelin, hurdles and the egg and spoon race. We were all great sports cheering on our team. Well done to this year’s winners who were the red team. The grown-ups were great sports too racing with a bean bag on their heads. A special thank you to Mrs Thorogood for all her hard work organising this amazing event.

Parent Information

A leaflet has been sent home in your child’s book bag today for ‘stamp tastic’. These are stamps to label your child’s clothes.  This is a great fund raising opportunity for the school. Every purchase will raise 20% commission for the Friends of Downs View and this is great way to personalise your child’s possessions.
