What we have been learning …..

EYFS

This week in EYFS we have been learning the Christmas story. We used the costumes to help act it out and then drew and wrote about our favourite part. Within our writing we tried hard to write the sounds that we could hear within the words we needed. In Maths we have been helping Santa work out how many presents he needed to deliver by combining the amounts of presents wrapped by two elves to find the total. In PSED we have started to think about how different cultures celebrate Christmas. We compared how houses are decorated and what different people eat for Christmas dinner. We have also been continuing practising our Christmas concert and we are all very excited to share it with you next week.

Year 1

This week in Year 1 we were alarmed to find that the Grinch has stolen the characters from our favourite festive stories! The children were most upset about this so set about creating missing posters for the characters so that we could solve the mystery and find them. We were impressed by all the adjectives they used to describe their characters appearance as well as personality. In Maths we had started to break teen numbers down into tens and ones. For example; 10 and 6 makes 16. We have been very busy during phonics and guided reading this week practising our blending and comprehension skills and applying these through a variety of games and activities. Wehave particularly liked the Disney themed ones! Our Nativity is coming along really well. If your child has brought words home this week, please help them to practise reading them in a loud, clear voice. We look forward to sharing it with you next week!

Year 2

What a festive week we have had in Year 2! We have loved decorating our classrooms. We have started off December reading the story of the Polar Express. We have used drama to retell the story and have written in the present tense pretending to be within the story. We have used lots of descriptive language such as adjectives, similes and adverbs. We have even based our guided reading on Polar Express this week and have thought about key parts, such as why the boy could still hear the bell but adults could not. In Maths we have used arrays to show multiplication equations and have shown the commutative law for multiplication. We have been busy practising our Christmas show and cannot wait to show you on Monday!

Year 2 parents

As we are an Infant School, once your child finishes in year 2 they will move on to Kennington Academy or another school.  There is an admission process which parents need to go through to secure a place for year 3 which involves completing an application form on line and submitting this by January.  You can apply from 5thNovemberuntil 15thJanuary 2019. .  Please see below for the last date of our joint tours – you need to call Kennington to book a place.

Date Time Tour begins at:
Friday 4th January 1.30pm Kennington Academy

 Christmas Fayre- 3.15pm-4.30pm

We hope to see you tonight at our Christmas Fayre where the Friends have organised lots of exciting things for your children to do and there will be stalls for you to do some Christmas shopping or win some amazing prizes.

Governors update

We have a strong Governing body who are volunteers to challenge and support the strategic direction of the school. The chair has summarised the latest actions made by the Governing body which you can access via the following link:  http://www.downs-view.kent.sch.uk/governors/

We currently have another vacancy for a new Governor. This is an exciting role where you can be involved in the strategic leadership of the school.  There are 6 meetings per year – one per term for 2 hours as well as opportunities to monitor school priorities through visits or via email. You may have a range of skills which you can you bring but the most important skill is having a passion for wanting the best education possible for the children of Downs View. If you are interested, or would like to know more please let the office know by telephone or via email on

office@downs-view.kent.sch.uk.  You are welcome to come along to attend as an observer at the next board meeting, which is on Thursday 24thJanuary at 4.30pm – 6.30pm at Downs View.
