The Friends of Downs View is the Parent/Teacher Association for our school. Our role is to organise and run fund-raising activities. Any money raised is used to provide resources, both large and small, to benefit the children at the school. The Friends Committee works very closely with the school to ensure that the funds raised go to approved projects. All parents automatically become members of the ‘Friends’ when their children join the school, and we would really love you to get involved and have a more active role. Please keep an eye out in your child’s book bag for information on upcoming meetings and future events! Join The Committee. Help with special events. Offer your ideas and suggestions.
The Friends of Downsview would like to thank everyone for their continued support in all we are doing to raise monies for the school. As you are aware there was a readathon recently and sponsor monies are coming in and the school will update with a total raised in due course.
During 2018, the Friends raised almost £11,000 which has gone towards the purchase of Ipads and Laptops for use in the school, recently over £600 has been spent on the purchase of new reading books for the children to use and gifts for the children at Easter and Christmas.
Co-op Local Community Cause
Don’t forget to nominate Friends of Downs View as your local Community Cause on your Co-op card. We are one of their Local Community Causes until October 2019. If you do not have a card yet but do shop in the Co-op please think about enrolling in this scheme as any amount will count, even the smallest amount. You can enrol online and for further information, please click the following link:
Whilst talking about the Co-op the children will shortly be bringing home in their book bag, a picture for them to colour if they wish to do so. We have jointly organised a colouring competition with the Co-op and each entry into the competition will cost 50p and all monies raised from this will be going to the Friends of Downs View. If your child wishes to enter please return the completed picture to the school with the 50p entry. All completed pictures are going to be displayed inside the Co-op so the children will be able to see their picture in the shop. There will be prizes for three winners who will be announced after Easter with the winning pictures displayed in the Co-op.
Mother’s Day Gift Sale
As noted in the school’s newsletter, the Friends are holding the Mother’s Day Gift shop again this year and this will be held on 25th(Year 2), 26th(Reception) and 27th(Year 1) March. The children have always enjoyed this and seeing the excitement on their faces when they are purchasing their own gifts makes the sale worth it. The children can bring in their donation for the sale on Friday 22ndMarch. If you would like your child to take part please send your child in with £2 in an envelope or purse/wallet to purchase a gift if for their Mother/Nan, Auntie or Sister which will be wrapped up for them and they will bring it home in time for Mother’s Day.
Plea for help
If anyone has any time to spare on the 25th, 26thor 27th March from about 1.45 the Friends would be grateful for any assistance you can provide in wrapping up the children’s Easter gifts.
We will also be holding a Spring Fayre on the 3rdMay and further details in relation to this will be provided in due course. On this occasion we do have some space to have stalls from other people and if you know anyone that would like a stall, please contact the Friends on firstname.lastname@example.org further information.

And all of the people that have volunteered to help to date
We have had an exciting start to the with the children all enjoying the Halloween parties. The children were all very excited and enjoyed themselves whilst bobbing for apples and having a go at the spooky lucky dips.
Everyone had fun and the Friends would like to say a big thank you to the parents who gave up their time to help with the preparations for the parties and staying to enjoy the fun with the children.
From the sale of the Halloween tickets and pumpkins, we raised just over £450.00. We also held a pre-loved uniform sale before half term and this raised a further £86.00. We will be holding another of these in the future but if there is any uniform you would like, please contact us and we will let you know if we have it.
Christmas Card Designs
We have also been excited to see the designs the children have come up with for their Christmas Cards and we thank those of you that took part in this project. The finished cards should be with us at the beginning of December and we will keep you updated on the progress of these. Once the finished cards are received, we can update you as to what percentage of the monies from the purchase of these cards goes to the Friends.
More good news is that the Friends of Downsview, have been selected as one of the local Community Causes for the Co-op until October 2019. What this means is that if you have a Co-op card, you can sign into your account and select the Friends of Downsview as your local Charity that you would like to support and each time you shop in a Co-op, 1% cashback of any own brand products you buy, will go to our Cause.
We therefore make a plea to any of you that have a Co-op card together with your friends and families (if they are not already supporting a Cause) to log on and select the Friends of Downsview as your local Community Cause.
If you do not have a card yet but do shop in the Co-op please think about enrolling in this scheme as any amount will count, even the smallest amount. You can enrol online and for further information, please click the following link:
The next exciting event that is on the calendar is the annual Christmas Fayre. This is on Friday 7th December from 3.15 pm in the school hall. There will be a raffle, tombola, lucky lollies and lucky envelopes to name a few of the stalls.
We are arranging a couple of sessions prior to this to get things ready for the Christmas Fayre. We will let you know the dates for these sessions as soon as possible which will be from about 1.30 pm to 2.45 pm at school. We would be grateful for any help in wrapping lucky dip prizes, arranging the lucky envelopes and wrapping presents.
We will also be having a parent Social on Wednesday 21st November at the Conningbrook Pub from 7.30 pm. We may have some Christmas bits to sort out but it is also a great opportunity for parents to get to know each other and have a chat and catch up.
From the monies that have been raised so far from Halloween and uniform sale, this will be put towards the purchase of new reading books for the children to use both in school and for reading at home. Any monies raised at the Christmas Fayre will also go towards this and the school are hoping to purchase the first set of books early next term.
