What we’ve been up to…..
This week in EYFS we have been amazed at how well the children have come in to school and settled. They have all been very brave and we thank you with your support with this. We would also like to thank you for letting us into your homes for home visit last week and hope that you found them as enjoyable as we did. We have been really busy this week getting to know the other children in the class and within the year group. We have been on a walk around the school to find out where everything is and some of us even managed to find our brothers and sisters! Just a little reminder that next week your children will be staying for lunch and will be in school from 8.40 (this is the time the bell is rung and the doors open) until 1.20pm.
Year 1 We have started our topic work on ‘Under the Sea’ this week and we have created their own fantasy sea creature. We have used adjectives, such as sharp teeth, pointy ears, to describe their creature. We then wrote sentences using capital letters, full stops and lots of adjectives. In Maths we have been counting objects up to 10 and representing numbers in lots of different ways.
What an exciting week we have had! Year 2 have enjoyed reading the story in English ‘Gregory the terrible eater,’ and have thought of their own descriptive sentences to describe interesting meals he may like. Although these weren’t appealing to us as they included random pieces of junk such as tin cans! In History we have started to learn about Florence Nightingale and we were enthusiastic to act out what the hospitals were like before Florence influenced nursing. We really enjoyed our skipping workshop, especially all the new skills and techniques such as cross over skipping and face to face skipping.
Stanley Baker Studios – School photographs
Stanley Baker Studios will be in school on Tuesday 27th September to take individual photographs of the children. If you have any younger siblings or children at the Junior School you would like included in the photo please come to school hall from 8am. We have informed the Junior School that some siblings may arrive slightly late. Breakfast Club will be in the hall from 8am so parents should enter through the far end door of the hall at the side of the school.
Macmillan Biggest Coffee Morning (and Afternoon)
On Thursday 29th we will be holding coffee morning and afternoon to raise money for the Macmillan Cancer Support charity. Please join us for coffee and cake at either 9am – 10am or 2pm – 3pm in the mobile. This is a great opportunity to meet other parents and welcome our new parents, whilst raising money for a good cause. If you would like to make a donation of a cake or cakes, these would be greatly received. Please bring these to the mobile before school. For more details please see Sam our FLO.
Sale of used uniform
The Friends will be holding a sale of used uniform on Thursday 22nd September at 8.30am and 2.15pm. If you are unable to attend the sale but still like to buy some uniform, please email the Friends on: email@example.com with any specific items you are particularly looking for. The Friends will then put these items aside for you, if there are some.
Working closely with Kennington Academy
Mrs Kent met with Mrs Wratten, the new Headteacher at Kennington Academy. She brings a wealth of expertise and new ideas to the school. We have made lots of plans for joint teacher meetings, observations at both schools, open sessions for prospective parents and agreed key events across the schools. This is an exciting time for Kennington Academy and we will continue to work very closely with them, to ensure the best outcomes for all pupils.
This week the working party for traffic and parking met with David Adams (Area Education Officer) from K.C.C to discuss the traffic and parking issues. He has helped us explore further solutions which will encourage children to come to school safely and hopefully reduce traffic and improve safety around the school. The School Council will be exploring some of these ideas too. We will have another working party meeting next Thursday at 2pm. If you would like to join the group and attend termly meetings please let the office know. If you have any ideas or suggestions please let us know! The church (opposite Kennington Carvery) in Ulley Road have allowed us to park in their car park before and after school. This is on a first come, first served basis.
As you may have seen Mr Beaney has worked extremely hard this week with building our new room. It is looking amazing! We can’t wait for it to be finished so that we can use it; it will be used as a ‘nurture room , where small groups of individual children can play and learn in a quiet area.
Our new Website
EIS who create our website have created a new one. We are in the process of updating photographs and information to ensure it reflects the amazing things which happen at Downs View, whilst also giving all vital information to you as current parents and prospective parents.
Open sessions for prospective parents:
The following sessions are available for prospective parents to visit both schools. If you are your child is going to year 3 or you are applying for a new sibling next year and would like a tour with your child, you can come to one of the following sessions. If you know any prospective parents, please pass on this information. Posters will be soon displayed in the community and in local nurseries. This will also be on both school’s websites.
