Year 1 – Welcome

Friday 8th September 2017

Dear Parents/ carers,

Welcome to Year 1!

We have had a fantastic start to the term and the children are settling into the new challenges and responsibilities well. Thank you for your hard work with the home learning set over the holidays – they are displayed in the corridor outside of each classroom. There will be an opportunity for you to see your child’s classroom and displays at our parent drop in next Friday 15th September from 3-4pm. (a letter from your child will follow with more details).

I would like to introduce myself; my name is Katie Norman and I am Year 1 Team Leader. I have been teaching for six years, three of these years at Downs View in Year 2. I am very excited for the new year ahead and look forward to supporting your child’s learning journey. Previous to teaching here at Downs View, I have worked in an International school in Dubai. This was an excellent experience and involved working with 10 other teachers within the year group. As you know at Downs View we have an ‘open door’ policy, so if you have any comments, compliments or queries, please feel free to pop by before or after school and have a chat!

There are a few things below which will help to settle your child to year 1:

Multi-sports kit- Wednesdays: Please remember to send your child to school with a kit for Wednesdays which can stay at school. This needs to be warm clothes with trainers which are suitable to be used outside on the field. Also, if your child wears earrings, these will need to be removed for PE lessons or taped over with Microporous tape for safety. Please ensure all items are named and in a separate bag.

Cold weather clothing: As our weather is always changing, it is important that all children have the necessary attire; wellies (to stay in school), a warm coat, hat, gloves so that they can partake in all aspects of their learning inside and outside. Please ensure these are also all named.

Home learning: Your child will be given spellings every week which support the weekly phonics and sounds taught in class. Alongside this, Maths and English home learning will be given on an alternative week basis and sent home in their Home Learning books. This will be given on a Friday and should be handed in by the following Wednesday to ensure the teacher has time to mark and return it. We will be stating to encourage independence with changing reading books, with opportunities to change their book daily or once it has been read.

Outside area: The area where you drop off and collect your child is year 1’s outside learning area. This is used on a regular basis during child initiated time (ID) and throughout lessons. There may be occasions where equipment is left out and we would appreciate your help and support with ensuring that younger siblings could respect this area and if using the equipment are supervised.  We would kindly ask that the sandpits and water trays are left closed as they are often set up for the next day with all sorts of treasure! We would also appreciate wait until 2.55pm before coming through the gate to the area to prevent distractions to the children getting ready for home time.

I hope this information will help your child and you to settle into year 1. If you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher or myself.

I look forward to working with you and your child during the year.

Thank you for your continued support.

Best Wishes

Katie Norman
