History
History Vision Statement
At Downs View we aim to provide a high-quality history education by shaping a creative, exciting and inclusive enquiry-based curriculum. Our history curriculum provides challenge, deeper learning and develops children’s curiosity about the past within Britain and the wider world. We believe children need to be equipped with the skills and knowledge to investigate, explore and think critically about historical events, places and significant people. Without an exceptional knowledge of the past and its impact on modern day living children would not be able to understand the complexities of people’s lives, the process of change and diversity of societies. Children will develop an understanding of their own, local and world history. Our unique curriculum is planned effectively to ensure that a broad and balanced curriculum is provided which incorporates a range of activities to develop and enhance these necessary skills. Learning is personalised to enable all pupils to excel in history and ensure their well-being is high. Through child-initiated time children develop their historical skills and knowledge further through activities that encourage children to ask perceptive questions, think critically, look at evidence, discuss content and make their own judgements. History is important for children to be able to follow the school values and ensure that ‘Altogether we learn, love, respect and have fun”.
School Values (Linked to School Plan)

Impact |
That all children will have the opportunity to make expected or greater than expected progress within history, from their baseline set in term 1 of each year. Children will understand this importance of the past and are challenged to think deeper about what they learn and know. They will develop the skills to think critically about historical content, including their own, local and world history. This will be seen through differentiated lessons so that all children are able to demonstrate the skills they have been taught and talk confidently about their learning. |
