Year 1
Welcome to Year 1
In Year 1 we love coming to school! Our curriculum is a fun and engaging curriculum where all children thrive. We promote our school values of ‘Altogether, we learn, love, respect and have fun’ in all areas of our curriculum. We provide learning that meets the needs and interests of the children in order to build the foundations for a lifelong love of learning. We love to get outside in all weathers and explore our environments, including our exciting forest school! Learning is purposeful and built upon with exciting opportunities to progress further.

Statutory Phonics Screening
What is the phonics screening?
The phonics screening was introduced in 2012 for all Year 1 pupils in the country. This is a short assessment to ensure that children are making sufficient progress in the phonics skills to enable them to read words. It will also check they are on track to become fluent readers who can enjoy reading for pleasure and for learning.
How does the check work?
Your child will sit with the class teacher and will be asked to read 40 words aloud. The assessment normally takes a few minutes. If your child is struggling the teacher will stop the check. The check is carefully designed not to be stressful for your child. The check consists of a list of 40 words, half real words and half nonsense words, the nonsense words will be shown to your child with a picture of an alien. This not only makes the check a bit more fun, but provides the children with a context for the nonsense word which is independent from any existing vocabulary they may have.
The screening check usually takes place in June and more information will be provided nearer the time.
